BEFORE THE MAST wants YOU!

PLOT|| CREW LIST|| FACE CLAIM|| NEWBIE GUIDE || WANTED ADS

We are open since August 2010 and going strong! And we are writing a swashbuckling adventure story which is waiting for your contribution too. So, join us and let’s write it together, because we are here to stay!

Its 1719 in the West Indies. War time, and pirates are also on the prowl. Sea fights, duels, plenty of swashbuckling adventures, intrigues of all kinds, mutiny, romance, betrayal - Before the Mast brings to live the Age of Sail like none before. Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island.

There is no Sparrow here, mate. Enjoy our gritty, realistic historical setting if you like learning about those times while getting immersed in weaving our original story.

Rapier with Scabbard

Decoration attributed to Gasparo Mola (Italian, Coldre ca. 1580–1640 Rome)

Dated: circa 1620–30

Culture: French or Italian

Medium: Steel, encrusted with gold and silver

Measurements: Length 49 1/4 in. ( 125.1 cm) Width 8 3/4 in. ( 22.23 cm)

The hilt decoration includes the coat of arms of the Albani family, possibly Orazio Albani (1576–1653), ambassador from Urbino to the papal court. While clearly influenced by French ornament, the decoration has been attributed to Gasparo Mola (1567–1640), a medalist and goldsmith working in Rome between about 1620 and 1630.

Napoleonic Hunting Sword

Dated: Late 18th-early 19th century

Measurements: Overall length 84.3 cm

A massive example with engraved silver-gilt mounts and reeded bone grip tapering from the broad oval pommel cap to the crescent guard. The wide blade lightly curved and single-edged, and expanded toward the tip, with blued and gilt panel for the first third decorated with foliate motifs and stands of arms to either side.

“In October 1811, The Boston Gazette reported that a five-month-old girl had been sent anonymously to the Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich with £50 in banknotes sewed up in her clothes. Inquiries revealed that the child’s father was a seaman in a British man-of-war. He had been allowed to take his wife to sea with him, but sadly he had been killed in action. The day after his death, his wife gave birth to a baby girl between two guns and then died herself. The shipmates of the dead seaman took care of the baby. They fed her crackers and water and took turns acting as nurses, moving her from hammock to hammock whenever they were called on deck. When the ship eventually returned to England, the sailors collected £50 from the ship’s company and arranged for the child and the money to be delivered to Greenwich. The child was reported to be remarkably healthy. She had been baptized Sally Trunnion, in reference to her place of birth—trunnions being the term for the two lugs that support a gun barrel on a gun carriage.”

It’s 1719 in the West Indies. War time, and pirates are also on the prowl. Sea fights, duels, plenty of swashbuckling adventures, intrigues of all kinds, mutiny, romance, betrayal - Before the Mast brings to live the Age of Sail like none before. Which side are you on?

OUR SHIPS NEED MORE CREW!

- a surgeon/ doctor, 28-55 years of age, from middle to upper class, not from nobility or a too rich family. (He might be younger, but then he is a surgeon’s mate, an apprentice) needed by the British Navy.

- 3 master gunners - 30-45 years of age, experienced artillery soldier, deployed with the marines. A veteran of the War of Spanish Succession, which he could have fought in on land or at sea. From a poor to middle class family, with some schooling, needed by the British Navy, French Navy and by the privateers.

- one boatswain - 30-45 years of age, from a poor to middle class family, with some schooling and with authority over the sailors (preferably because he can impose naturally) needed by the British Navy.

- 2 midshipmen - 14-18 years of age, sons of noble or wealthy families with high connections, needed by the British Navy and by the French Navy.

- sailors - as many as possible, anywhere between the ages of 15 and 50, volunteers or victims of the press gang (for the British and French Navy). Privateers are only volunteers. Among them, a jovial older mentor would be welcome, a roguish man in his 20s, and any other types you might wish.

We hope you love drama, action and romance, because that’s what we have to offer here. Being a part of our crews will give you the opportunity to get involved in sea battles, duels, political intrigues and all kind of adventures. The plot will further develop according to your wishes, as, besides the general plot/ laying, there are several player-driven side ones. Your characters will have crewmates, finding among them friends or enemies, and plots to enter in immediately. The pirates are clearly the enemy, and we have many stories still left to be told…

Additional Information/Notes:
The requirements are simple - people who can write in English (not all our players are native English speakers, but they can write in English) and who can post at least once a week for each character/ thread.
